Keyword search volume API

Exact Google monthly search volume, CPC and trends as JSON from one POST, with no Google Ads account. Code, a real response and the cost.

The short answer

Yes, there is a keyword search volume API that needs no Google Ads account: call the Keyword Search Volume Actor over Apify's REST API. One POST with a keyword list returns exact Google Keyword Planner monthly searches, CPC, competition and history as JSON. It costs $4.25 per 1,000 keywords (Apify Free-plan prices) and you cap each call with maxTotalChargeUsd.

Google's official route is the Google Ads API, which needs a Google Ads account, a developer token and OAuth set up. This one needs only an Apify API token.

One request, rows back

curl -X POST "https://api.apify.com/v2/acts/wrenfield-data~keyword-search-volume/run-sync-get-dataset-items?maxTotalChargeUsd=2" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $APIFY_TOKEN" -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"keywords": ["standing desk", "walking pad"], "location": "United States", "language": "English"}'

The call waits for the run (up to 5 minutes) and returns the dataset rows. For long lists or schedules, start the run asynchronously and read the dataset when it finishes; the Actor README shows both patterns.

Python

from apify_client import ApifyClient
client = ApifyClient(TOKEN)
run = client.actor("wrenfield-data/keyword-search-volume").call(
    run_input={"keywords": ["standing desk", "walking pad"], "location": "United States"},
    max_total_charge_usd=2)
for row in client.dataset(run["defaultDatasetId"]).iterate_items():
    print(row["keyword"], row["search_volume"], row["cpc"])

Apify Free-plan prices read from the Apify API when this page is built; paid Apify plans pay less per keyword. Keywords without data are free. The Actor stops cleanly at your spend cap.

FAQ

Is there a Google keyword search volume API without a Google Ads account?

Yes. The Keyword Search Volume Actor on Apify exposes Google Keyword Planner data over a REST API. You need an Apify API token, not a Google Ads account or developer token. It costs $4.25 per 1,000 keywords.

Does the official Google Ads API give search volume?

Yes, through the Keyword Plan Idea Service, but it requires a Google Ads account, a developer token and OAuth credentials.

How many keywords per API call?

Thousands. Keywords are sent to Google in batches of 1,000, and you pay one request fee per batch.

How do I limit what a call can spend?

Pass maxTotalChargeUsd on the run (a query parameter in the REST API, max_total_charge_usd in the Python client). The Actor stops cleanly when the limit is reached.

Can an AI agent call it?

Yes. Add the Actor to the Apify MCP server with one URL: https://mcp.apify.com?tools=wrenfield-data/keyword-search-volume. The agent sees the input schema and output fields.

Is the data exact?

It is Google Keyword Planner data: the 12-month average of monthly searches, rounded by Google into buckets for lower volumes.
